For more than 100 years, local Y’s have been the place Americans go to find the most trusted instructors of swimming and lifeguard training, so much that the YMCA has been called "America's Favorite Swim Instructor." Swim laps in our 6 lane competitive pool, and enjoy our Family pool for open swims with the family, lunch time lane swims or an aqua aerobics class with friends. Our outdoor Splash Pad is open annually from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend!

SAfety around water

Our Safety Around Water program is a free course that ensures that your three to five year old child is armed with life-saving knowledge on how to stay safe around water. This four-class course, offered in two separate sessions, teaches children ages three to five water safety and basic swimming skills that help to reduce the risk of drowning and build confidence around water. The program is free to any resident of DeKalb County, member or non-member. These sessions are only offered in the  summer.  Contact Torin Kellett at for more information.

Swim Lessons

YMCA's are world pioneers in swimming instruction and water safety. At area Y’s, children and adults not only learn how to swim, but also learn about themselves, safety and rescue skills, and water activities that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Throughout all levels, students are taught aquatic, boating safety and rescue skills. YMCA’s also offer water fitness classes and a competitive swim program for youth.

At the beginning of 2018, we made some changes in order to better instruct your swimmer and inspire him or her to meet goals, face challenges with confidence, and grow in their journey toward a life-long relationship with the water. With our lower student-to-instructor ratio, your swimmer will continue to receive plenty of personal attention.

Swim lessons are taught using seven structured lesson plans that build upon each other over an eight-week session. The eighth week's lesson time is used as a Game Day, where swimmers celebrate their progress with their instructor and play games that utilize their new skills. In the event that a swim lesson needs to be canceled for any reason, the canceled lesson will be taught the following week and will continue on schedule, with the 7th lesson taking the place of Game Day.

Please use the links below to compare the previous program to our new YMCA Swim Lessons to determine which level is most appropriate for your child.
